Dedication

A few thoughts for all of us as Greg M. and I get ready to go over to the Coleman Keep for a morning of breakfast and visiting with James and Gregory.

One dear friend said recently that what really fascinated her about Greg when her son started taking lessons from him years ago, was that he had dedicated his life to music. He didn't just play part time (like most of us), but filled every hour with art (I'm sure his mountain climbing was artful) and helped us all to feel the passion he felt at a piece of music suffused with genius, or at the beauty of a simple E chord on the guitar. She said she had never met a person so dedicated to art.

And now we learn firsthand about the people who dedicate themselves to caring for the ill. Not the chemical geniuses or the docs with the rocket ship lasers, but the experienced people who know just how to help a sick person into a wheelchair, or into a bed. Those whose job it is to stay up all night and watch when loved ones can no longer do it all. They could have other jobs, easier jobs with easier hours, but they choose caretaking and nursing. Understated love and calm strength to help us all.

Greg, you call me to make a creme caramel in Trabuco, so I took the first plane from France and I am so happy to be with you today. You sang for me and I love your voice, and it was a pleasure for to see you with your friend Bill. You are surrounded by a lot of love, and I can go back to France happy and to know that people are taking so much care of you. Hope to see you soon on my way to Papeete in October. You know that we think of you very often and for the future also.
Love and bisous,
Pierrette

Hi Gregory,
Thank you for making the CD of music from Old and New California, Mexico and Spain. I'm enjoying my copy and wanted you to know how it affected me. I listened to it as I was relaxing and it brought thoughts to me of when I gave tours at the Old Mission of San Juan Capistrano. I would picture various areas of the Mission as I listened to the music. The arches, the waterfountains, the walkways and the grounds in general. The music even brought to mind various events that I participated in at the Mission, I could relive the events all over again as the music continued. The conserts in the Serra Chapel, the return of the Swallows on the feast day of St. Joseph when I would wear a dress from the 1800's and walk among the tourists greeting them. The dances performed with people in Spanish costums and Indians like "Tonto" who participated in the events of the day.
Thank you for the memories relived through listening to this very special CD.

Today, instead of going to work I decided to drive to Mt. Whitney. All the way up and all the way back I listened to Sarabande of the West and Isla California cds. No other music could enhance the magic of nature's beauty the way Gregory's own compositions do. What a wonderful rut in which to be stuck! Thank you for opening my heart to all that music has to offer to us.

Margie is right. The care-givers are a special race, a breed apart, and you can't help but feel grateful that there is someone with the empathy to serve, and the skill to teach how to do all those things that you didn't know that you didn't know.
I also feel grateful to those like you, Greg, who make the music. What an amazing body you have! Those fingers that can pluck chords, those ears that can detect a subtle difference in a rendition and that perceive the rhythm and timing of a line of music. All those notes and sound that seem wired into you and then translated for us to appreciate. You have been a guide to the voice of the guitar.
Then, there's your mouth, that has that wicked wit and that appreciates my French toast...
The force is with you Obi Wan and to your crew of care-giver Jedite knights. XXX Debbie Laughton

Greg it was wonderful to spend time with you yesterday. Thank you for giving me a lesson. I am inspired by your grace and by the fact that you never ease up as a teacher. You have always expected, even demanded that I play better than I think I can. My love and gratitude to you. Gail

I am so saddened by the news of the death of your father. I wished fervently for a miracle, knowing in my heart it couldn't be, but dreaming, so that you wouldn't lose him, and all his fans and friends could yet enjoy his love, his laughter, his wit, his music, his being! This is also the anniversary of my Mother's death 9 years ago. My sisters and I will be gathering in her honor as we do every year on September 17. This year Gregory will be a part of our memorial day. Words seem meaningless at this time of great loss.

Gibran wrote in THE PROPHET:
" For what is it to die but to stand naked
in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to
free the breath from its restless tides, that
it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?"

Gregory is free from all his pain and suffering. This is the only comfort the living have. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your wonderful family, and all those whose lovingly cared for Gregory during his illness.
In sympathy ,
Majda
